Spinal Cord Injury Transitions and Wellness Program

 

Health and Wellness Classes

Participants in the Transitions program will learn how to develop healthy lifetime habits and behaviors that prevent common medical complications and promote wellness through a series of nine one-hour health education classes. Classes will consist of live group instruction as well as videotaped and written instructional materials.

  1. Spine anatomy and spinal cord injury basics

  2. Autonomic dysfunction, autonomic dysreflexia, blood pressure management and everyday preparedness.

  3. Spasticity and pain

  4. Bowel and bladder management, skin care and prevention of pressure sores

  5. Health promotion, immunizations, nutrition and weight management

  6. Emotional adjustment, sexual health and sleep

  7. Attendant care, income benefits, vocational issues and legal rights

  8. Therapeutic recreation opportunities, adapted community mobility and wheelchair skills

  9. Equipment and Shoulder Protection
