Between Walking and Wheelchair: Living with Incomplete SCI
A Panel Discussion
Presented on April 25, 2018
In this panel discussion, four individuals with incomplete spinal cord injuries who walk some or most of the time, talk about their experiences as someone who doesn’t always “look disabled” but nonetheless has many of the same challenges and medical problems as someone with SCI who uses a wheelchair full time. Often they feel they are in a “limbo” state between disabled and non-disabled, not fully belonging in either category, and sometimes misunderstood. In addition to the panel discussion, we show video clips of how each person walks using assistive devices such as canes and braces. The discussion is moderated by UW rehabilitation medicine psychologist Jeanne Hoffman, PhD.
