SCI Forum
Infectious Diseases and Spinal Cord Injury
Presented by Stephen Burns, MD, director of the Spinal Cord Injury Service at VA Puget Sound Health Care System and an associate professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington.
People living with SCI are at increased risk of infections, including fatal infections, which are the second most common cause of death. Infections that are more common in people with SCI include urinary tract (bladder or kidney) infections, pneumonia, bloodstream infections, skin infections, bone infections (osteomyelitis), “MRSA” and “C diff.” In this presentation, Dr. Burns reviews how the immune system is affected by SCI, the recommendations for vaccines, and strategies to prevent infections, treat infections, and minimize the risk of side effects from antibiotic treatment.
